Essay Word Counter — Check Your Essay Against the Limit

Paste your essay and see the word count update as you type, along with characters, sentences, paragraphs and reading time. Nothing is uploaded; the counting happens in this page, which matters when the essay is unsubmitted coursework.

How strict is an essay word limit?

It depends who set it, and it is worth finding out before you spend an evening cutting. Most universities publish a tolerance — commonly plus or minus ten per cent — and apply a mark penalty beyond it. Some departments deduct a fixed percentage per hundred words over; others simply stop reading at the limit, which is worse.

The other question is what counts. Departments differ on whether footnotes, in-text citations, the reference list, appendices, tables and the title are included. A 2,000-word essay with sixty citations can swing by two hundred words depending on the rule, so check the handbook rather than assuming.

This counter reports the plain word count of whatever you paste. If your institution excludes the bibliography, paste the body without it.

Typical essay lengths

Lengths cluster by level rather than by subject. A secondary-school essay usually runs 300 to 1,000 words. Undergraduate coursework sits between 1,500 and 3,000, with dissertations far longer. Postgraduate essays commonly run 3,000 to 5,000.

Page counts are a poor substitute for a word count, but the rough conversion helps when a brief is given in pages: double-spaced 12pt Times New Roman comes to roughly 275 words per page, single-spaced roughly 550.

  • Secondary school — 300 to 1,000 words
  • Undergraduate coursework — 1,500 to 3,000 words
  • Postgraduate essay — 3,000 to 5,000 words
  • Double-spaced page — roughly 275 words

Cutting an essay without gutting it

Over-length essays are almost never over because of too many ideas; they are over because of how the ideas are phrased. The reliable savings are in the joins — "it is important to note that", "in order to", "due to the fact that" — which cost between three and six words each and carry no argument.

After that, look for the paragraph that restates your introduction in different words, usually the last one before the conclusion. Removing it typically recovers more than a hundred words and rarely costs a mark.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the word count include the bibliography?

This tool counts every word you paste, so it depends what you paste. Most institutions exclude the reference list and appendices from the limit but include in-text citations — check your handbook, because departments within the same university often differ.

How far over the limit can I go?

A tolerance of ten per cent either way is the most common published rule, but it is a rule set by your department and not a universal one. Some apply a fixed mark deduction per hundred words over; a few stop marking at the limit.

How many pages is 1,500 words?

About five and a half double-spaced pages in 12pt Times New Roman, or under three single-spaced. Font, spacing and margins all move this, which is why briefs are increasingly given in words rather than pages.

Do hyphenated words count as one or two?

This counter treats a hyphenated compound as a single word, which is how Microsoft Word and Google Docs count it too. That is the convention markers expect.

Is my essay uploaded anywhere?

No. The counting happens inside this browser tab and the text is never sent to a server. There is no account and nothing is stored after you close the page — worth knowing for unsubmitted work that will go through plagiarism software later.
