Unlock PDF for Editing 2026 — Free Online
Remove the editing restriction from a PDF that opens perfectly well but will not let you change anything. Files like that carry no open password, so this needs no password from you either.
The kind of lock this removes
There are two ways a PDF can be locked, and they behave very differently. One asks for a password before it will open at all. The other opens immediately and simply tells your reader which operations to disable — editing, copying, printing. The second kind is what greys out the editing tools in Acrobat on a file you never had to type anything to read.
That second kind is described as owner-restricted: it has an owner password governing the permissions, and an empty user password, which is why it opens without one. Supplying that empty password is a legitimate decryption rather than a trick — it is the password the file was made with.
So if your PDF opens straight away but refuses to be edited, drop it in above and take the download. Nothing needs to be entered.
- Opens without a prompt but tools are greyed out — this page
- Asks for a password to open — you will need that password
- The restriction is removed, not just ignored
What comes back
A PDF with the encryption and permission entries gone. Editing tools become available again in whatever editor you use, and the pages are unchanged — the file is not rasterised, re-compressed or reflowed on the way through.
This matters for the alternative people usually reach for, which is printing the document to a new PDF. That does clear the restrictions, and it also flattens form fields, drops bookmarks and links, and often re-encodes the images. Decrypting properly avoids all of it.
If the file turns out to want a real password, you will be told so rather than handed a file that looks fine and cannot be reopened. Enter it and the same download works.
Whether the restriction was doing anything
Worth knowing before you go looking for a tool at all: permission bits are honoured by readers rather than enforced by the file. Several editors ignore them entirely, so a document that Acrobat refuses to edit may open for editing elsewhere without any unlocking.
That is also the honest reason this works. Nothing is being defeated — the restriction was always advisory, and removing it makes the file's contents match what any number of tools would have done with it anyway.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need the password?
Not if the PDF opens without asking for one. Those files carry only owner-level restrictions and are decrypted with the empty password they were made with. If yours prompts you before it opens, you will need that password.
Why does my file ask for a password?
Then it has an open password rather than only a restriction, and its contents are genuinely encrypted. Enter the password on this page and it will be removed along with the restrictions.
Will the layout change?
No. The document is decrypted and re-saved, not re-rendered. Text stays selectable, form fields stay live, bookmarks and links survive — none of which is true of printing to a new PDF.
Is removing an editing restriction legal?
It depends entirely on the document and your relationship to it, and that is not something a web page can decide for you. Removing a restriction from your own file is unremarkable; doing it to someone else's licensed material may not be.
Does anything get uploaded?
No. The file is decrypted and re-saved in this browser tab.
