650 words, and the limit is enforced

The Common Application personal essay accepts between 250 and 650 words. This is not a guideline with a tolerance — the text box will not accept a 651st word, so an essay that is over does not get marked down, it gets cut off mid-sentence unless you fix it first.

That makes the count worth checking before you paste rather than after. Formatting is also stripped: bold, italics and unusual spacing do not survive into the box, so write assuming plain text.

The Coalition Application uses a similar range. Individual universities that run their own portals set their own limits, and those vary widely enough that they have to be checked one at a time.

Supplemental essays are a different problem

Most selective universities ask for supplemental essays alongside the personal statement, and these run much shorter — commonly 100 to 400 words, sometimes 50. A "why this college" answer in 150 words is a harder piece of writing than the 650-word essay, because there is no room to build up to the point.

Applying to eight or ten universities can mean twenty or more of these. The word counts are given per prompt and are enforced the same way.

Getting under 650 without flattening it

Nearly every over-length draft is over because of setup. The first paragraph explains the situation, and then the second paragraph starts the actual story. Deleting the first paragraph and beginning at the moment something happens usually recovers eighty to a hundred and fifty words and improves the essay, because admissions readers are reading hundreds of these and the ones that start slowly lose them.

The other reliable cut is the closing paragraph that explains what you learned. If the essay has done its work, the reader has already understood it, and stating it explicitly reads as though you did not trust them.
